Cognitive Behaviour Skills for Youth Justice Workers

There is a substantial body of research indicating that many adolescent offenders have deficits in a number of cognitive skills, which are required for adequate social and emotional adjustment. Cog Skills training is a favoured approach from the Scottish Executive for young people in secure accommodation and prison. Participation in structured cognitive-behavioural interventions that target these deficits purposefully and appropriately has been shown to lead to significant and long lasting improvements both in social behaviour more generally and in delinquent outcomes more specifically.

This course will not only help equip staff to work with young people with offending behaviour but will better support community based staff in developing relationships with young people being discharged from secure institutions. The course will be presented in small bite size pieces of 16 half days over a period of 10 months which will enable participants to attend with minimum disruption of their normal workload. The course includes structured group activities, role playing, thinking games, puzzles and problem-solving.

Some of the content may seem remote from the interest and experiences of participants. This is intentional. It is designed to broaden horizons get them to think about issues they seldom think about, give them opportunities to practice skills in unfamiliar contexts and make them feel they can deal with matters that they might think are beyond their competence. Participants will be expected to attend and complete the whole course and to be able to bring examples of their work throughout the course which evidences their understanding of the material.

This course is designed for those workers who have already met the registration requirements of the SSSC and will enable them to meet their continuing professional development requirements. It is designed for staff with

  • above average verbal skills,
  • ability to relate positively and empathetically with young people,
  • sensitivity to group dynamics, ability to challenge young people without demeaning them,
  • above average interpersonal skills,
  • enthusiastic.

It should also support the development and retention of qualified staff. Ideally the course will attract a mixture of senior workers as well as qualified and experienced basic grade staff.

The course will be certificated on successful completion.

The venue will in our new base in Rosyth. Places will be restricted to 10 and for the full course will cost £650 (+vat) per person.

Managing Your Bullies

The Managing Your Bullies service is not counselling

Managing Your Bullies is not a course per se. We can do courses but -

Managing Your Bullies...is an ......Active Empowerment Service...which is solution-focussed and aimed to help employers and employees manage their bullies in situ. We use only your normal company procedures and the skills of your employees.

We will support the victim in using their own skills and / or the companies procedures to “manage their bully”.  We aim to equip the victim with the skills to manage their situation without resort to sickness, lawyers or the courts. It is a service which is open to both employees as individuals and to employers to retain and refer to.

Workplace Bullying Costs

Money -Workplace Bullying costs employers and their insurers thousands, millions  of pounds each year in compensation, sick pay, lost time and revenue and reputation.

In one case in America it cost an employer $50 million pounds, $7 million of which went to one employee!

Scotland’s lawyers recognise the care sector as a claims growth area. The evidence suggests that in the care sector we do not know how to care for our employees.

Did you know?

  •  Employees who are bullied at work are bullied because they are good at the job.
  •
  • Employees who leave because of bullying prosper in whatever they do next. (www.bullyonline.org.uk)

  • In reality you could be losing your best people.- No sensible employer wants this.
  •
  • Most employers want to keep both the bully and the victim.
  •
  • This is what an active empowerment service will help you do.

One way or another the care sector and the taxpayer pays for Workplace Bullying, either... at Court or tribunal, or better still....by putting in place programmes to prevent it happening in the first place and to manage it when it does happen.

Retaining a service like Oilean will pay substantial returns in the long run. It gives your employees a message, it gives your insurers a message and if you are unfortunate enough to face a tribunal it gives them a message too. You have a policy of - Zero Tolerance to Workplace Bullying

Solution Focussed Approaches to Anger Management

"Solution-focussed approach to anger management" is a two day course. It is a derivative of a cognitive behavioural model. The first day's input is on using solution focussed anger management techniques and the second is about the participants feeding back their own experiences of using the techniques and a refresher on their understanding of the processes. The participants will then be able to talk about the programme in action. The feedback on the outcomes of the use of the techniques will involve comment from families and carers.

Introduction to Social Care

There are approximately 140,000 social care staff across Scotland. Across the sector there are on average 10% vacancies at any one time.

Many people come to work in social care as a second career. Those who do generally find a very special niche for themselves. Oilean works with ex-taxi drivers, policemen, plasterers, window cleaners, company directors to develop their skills and qualifications.

It is a big leap for many to consider. Do I have the skills? What qualifications do you need? No-one would have me. I am too old, too young, too -----

The reality is often quite different to what you might think. The social care sector is a growing sector in Fife, as it is across the country.

The introduction to social care course is a six day programme designed as an introduction to practice, to the law, child protection, adult protection, challenging behaviour and Health and Safety etc. It is also designed to link with the sectors qualifications, HNC and SVQ.

The programme will end with support to complete social care job application forms with a guarantee of an interview with a leading care provider.
